Year B Collects

1 Advent – Year B

God of sun and moon,

Lord of day light and dim night,

when our stars fall,

when our life’s sun no longer shines,

your son comes to us

in our soul’s dark night.

Even if we know not when,

now today

we can be bright for others,

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

2 Advent – Year B

Lord God,

you are the one found on the trail

of our brambled lives.

You have sent us path blazers

to clear the way.

Now with you we walk,

only to be sent on another by-path,

to clear the way for others,

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

3 Advent – Year B

God by all names,

you have called us by name.

When asked

“Who are you?”

by your name

we stand up in the wilderness

crying make straight the way

for Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

4 Advent – Year B

God, birthing all that is,

you have impregnated us

with your love, and word,

and newborn life.

Now we are to give birth

to a new world

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

1 Christmas – Year B

God of the Word,

you are the tent God,

pulling up stake

to be wherever we roam.

It is time for us

to see who dwells in our midst,

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

2 Christmas – year B

God of the journey,

you dream us into Egypt

to safeguard our God given gifts.

But now you call us back,

back across the river.

We know in our dreams

that you journey us to a new world,

new through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

1 Epiphany – Year B

God who washes,

and cleans away our un-baptized reluctance,

you call us beloved.

So loved, may we love in turn

all your sons and daughters,

and so be in solidarity with Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

2 Epiphany – year B

God of all vision,

you see us

under our fig trees,

see us as we are,

where we are,

and know us well.

Without guile or deceit

we come and see

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

3 Epiphany – year b

God of the moment,

this moment,

every moment,

you call us straightaway

to put aside our routine nets

to fish for the kingdom now.

It has arrived already and always

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

 4 Epiphany – Year B

Cleansing God, by your purifying presence

you drive out of us all unclean spirits:

self-righteousness,

arrogance,

poor self-image,

fear of failure,

or disappointment.

May we now forever see within ourselves

that creating power of your son

who lives and reigns with you and your life giving breath,

forever and ever. Amen

5 Epiphany – Year B

Omnipresent God,

always, everywhere,

in your love for us,

you allow us to reach you in any place and any time,

because nothing exists without you permeating it

through and through.

Wherever we are,

wherever we go,

you are there also.

However, because of the noise and crowds surrounding us,

we need at times to go to a deserted place,

a lonely solitary place.

May we reconnect with you in our desert

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

6 Epiphany – Year B

Empathic Lord of the universe,

from the unsearchable depths of your being

comes your choice to make us whole.

Your compassion deeply moves you to desire our welfare.

We not only ask you to cleanse us of the stains and strains of our lives;

we also pray that we in turn may be compassionate to our neighbors

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Last Epiphany – Year B

Sparkling God,

you dazzle us on the mountain top

with the brilliance of your glow.

You bring light into our otherwise dark lives.

At first we think we are blinded by your brightness.

But you lead us down from the mountain.

We pray that you may transfigure our very eyes,

transformed eyes

to be able to see you shining through everyone we meet

on streets,

in markets,

and at home.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

1 Lent – Year B

Lord God,

you not only dwell in the far beyond our sight,

you also live close by in the darkness of our longings,

which also is sometimes far beyond our sight.

You establish your kingdom,

surrounding us with wild beasts to embolden us.

Give us courage to re-turn, re-pent,

and see you through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

2 Lent – Year B

Generous God,

you sent your son to teach us

that letting go of our made-up self

is the hard road to becoming our true selves.

You let go of your Word,

sweeping over us,

and it transformed the world.

Now give us the courage to deny self,

take up our cross at our crossroads,

and follow where your son has gone before,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

3 Lent – Year B

God of all wildness,

you go where you would go,

and be where you would be.

We can never pin you down.

The building is not your only temple.

You also dwell betwixt and between every nook and cranny.

When we try to domesticate you,

you defy our useless efforts.

May we now not only see you everywhere,

but kneel and kiss the ground

and respect every place as sacred,

as your place.

Drive from our behavior the selfish money changer

and dove merchant façade

that we clothe ourselves in,

so we can worship you and Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

4 Lent – Year B

Nudging God,

who gently attracts us into the light of eternal life,

you lead us away from our self-condemning behavior

into your alluring presence.

We thank you for always calling us back

when we are looking the other way.

You did not send your Son to condemn the world

but to save it.

Help us to always live into that freedom

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

5 Lent – Year B

Birthing God, you give us new life

when suffering comes our way.

When we hurt and pain

you hover by our side

with a tear in your eye.

When we think our life is useless and hopeless,

you stand ready with purpose and meaning.

When our hearts are troubled,

take our hands

as we follow Jesus

through the gates of earthly hell

to fullness of life eternal.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Palm Sunday – Year B

Hosanna, God,

Hosanna Lord of the streets.

You ride through our highways and byways.

You don’t desert us

even when our shouts are shallow

and our palm branches dry up.

Your humble donkey-mounted son

images your presence

even down our back alleys.

When the parade is over,

may we stay true

as you are to us

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Easter – Year B

God of all refreshment,

on the third day

you raised your son

from the death of his grave.

Humanity has been buried

and trembles in hurts, suffering and disappointments;

and you have been tearfully with us.

Now is our third day.

Raise us up from the seeds and ashes

of these graves

to new life,

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

2 Easter – Year B

God of peace,

you bring tranquility into our conflicted lives.

You raised Jesus from the still tomb;

yet we continue to be entombed

behind the closed locked doors of our fear.

Open wide our doors and windows to the fresh air of new life.

As Jesus showed his disciples his hands and feet,

may we show ours to those waiting for our love.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

3 Easter – Year B

Lord God, you bless us with your presence.

When we feel haunted,

you spirit-surround us.

You take our joy and wonder

and dispel our fear.

May we all sit down at table

and fish-dine with Jesus

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

4 Easter – Year B

Shepherd, my Lord,

you pasture us in green fields of your love.

When wolves of our own making

menace the refuge of your care,

you send your son,

our Good Shepherd.

Give us ears to hear his voice,

to follow his lead.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

 5 Easter – Year B

God of the vineyard,

you always stand ready to prune the branches in each of us

that have withered and are useless.

You clip, trim, snip and cut back

till we have more healthy growth.

May we bloom and blossom,

precious to our true vine,

Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

6 Easter – Year B

Fountain head of all love,

you fashioned the world

out of your ever abiding care.

You love your son

with the same love he passes on to us.

May we continue and remain in this love,

to be able to lay down our lives

in selfless giving

for each other.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

7 Easter – Year B

World affirming God,

you so loved the world that you sent your son

that all may have eternal life.

We are not of the kind of world

that neglects what you affirm.

Yet we live in this world

embracing eternal life

with our feet firming planted on this fragile earth,

our island home.

Help us to remake the world

in your image

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Pentecost Day – Year B

Our Father and Mother, well spring of all life,

you sent your Holy Spirit

upon the apostles

permeating both their holy and also quirky selves.

Take us as we are,

both our first-rate and shocking selves

and infuse us with the same Spirit

that we, transformed,

may transform the world

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Trinity Sunday –Year B

God of unlimited

many ways,

you have revealed yourself

as one but more,

unable to be pinned down.

May we in your image

accept the more

in each other

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 5 – Year B

Father of our family,

you sent your first born son

to gather your children

into one household.

May we always do your will

as true mother, brother and sister,

eternal kin

of Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 6 – Year b

God of heaven and earth,

you have been farming

longer than any of us have noticed.

From our small seeds

you make good to sprout

in our lives.

Awaken our eyes to see

what you have done

while we slept.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

 Proper 7 – Year B

God of storm and sea,

when we thought you

asleep in the stern,

you cracked an eye

to say to our fear

“Be still, quiet.”

May we in turn calm

the fears of each other

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 8 – Year B

Mirthful God,

you laugh together with us

when joy brings tears to our eyes.

The dreadful mourners

laughed at Jesus in their pessimism.

May we learn to always laugh with each other,

never at each other.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 9 – Year B

Often rejected God,

your son tells us to move on

when we are rejected.

Yet you remain with us

no matter how we treat you.

No matter where we move on to,

you are with still with us.

Help us to move gracefully,

sighting you,

to where you want us

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 10 – Year B

God of truth,

God of truth-sayers,

By your grace your prophets dare all

to speak your word.

Grace us, as you did John the Baptist,

to have the pluck to speak truth.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 11 – Year B

God of rest,

God of action,

when we have no time to put our feet up

you call us to break-time with you.

When we become complacent

in our small worlds

you thrust us into action.

Always give us balance in our hectic lives

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 12 – Year B

God of abundance,

your teeming life

challenges us to be brimful

when we only believe in scarcity.

Take our little fish and bread,

and show us plenty,

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 13 – Year B

God of bread,

God of wine,

you send living nourishment,

your son, our Christ,

to fill the hole

deep within us.

Give us courage

to follow the way

that leads to eternal living,

your son Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 14 – Year B

God, host of the universe,

you have sent out the invitations,

to dine with your son,

the bread of eternal life,

the bread of enrichment.

May we graciously sit at table,

your multigrain board,

with rich and poor, saint and sinner alike,

both humble and haughty,

all hungry.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 15 – Year B

God of flesh and blood,

when we are truly hungry and thirsty,

spiritually malnourished,

you give us your son

to feed on,

to satisfy our longing hearts.

Give us courage

to pass on this eternal nourishment

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 16 – Year B

Abiding God,

you in Jesus, Christ enduring in us,

we in you,

to whom else can we go?

Your son’s words of eternal life

empower us to stand steadfast

with each other in you

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 17 – Year B

Creator God,

all you have made is good,

even very good.

We in our divided minds

separate your creation

into clean and unclean.

Clear our minds to see you

both in what we call profane

as well as in the sacred.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 18 – Year B

God of even small crumbs,

you see all people,

of all shapes and races,

as your children.

Then how can we deny crumbs

to those who need even more,

denying our own hidden family.

Open our hearts through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 19 – Year B

Our Father,

you have sent us your son, our brother.

But do we know who he is?

Free us from our mistaken ideas of Jesus,

so knowing him

we may know ourselves,

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

 Proper 20 – Year B

Humble God,

You deemed it right to be one of us.

In our arrogance, our pride

smudges our inheritance as your children.

Give us pluck to welcome the child

and all the lowly, those disenfranchised,

poor, neglected, lonely and neglected.

Then learning from them we will become like you,

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 21 – Year B

Generous God,

you sent your son Jesus the Christ

to spice up our lives in your kingdom.

We know that if we follow his ways,

even if we lose hand or foot,

we will be the salt of the earth.

We pray that we will never lose our saltiness

to dull stumbling passing gratifications.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 22 – Year B

One God,

what you have coupled together

we are not to separate.

You have joined race with race,

nation with nation,

people with people,

people with nature.

Yet we separate by prejudice, war and pollution.

Bring us together once again

as you visioned in your original blessing.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 23 – Year B

God of all riches,

rich in beauty, goodness and love,

you call us to share in your wealth.

However, we have been distracted,

sidetracked by selfish wants.

Empower us to let go our false selves,

so that we may have true riches

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 24 – Yar B

Humble and humbling God,

when we strive to sit

at the right and left of power

you love us in spite of our arrogance

or in spite of our insecurity.

When we misplace ourselves

guide us to our proper place

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 25 – Year B

All seeing, perceiving God,

when we fumble around in our darkness,

You ask:

What do you want me to do for you?”

Let us see again.

Let us perceive again.

Let us understand again,

understand where you lead us,

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

All Saints Day – Year B

All holy, hallowing God,

you come to us in our mundane humdrumness,

and adopt us into exciting sanctity.

We beg your grace to be able to live

as the saints you have called us to be.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 27 – Year B

Openhanded God,

when we are down to our last mite,

our last mite of hope,

our last mite of friends,

our last mite of love,

you surround us with a full load of free grace,

grace on the house.

Teach us to be generous with whatever little we have,

knowing how abundantly rich we are

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 28 – Year B

God who tumbles all stones,

stones we use for walls that bar,

help us to see

in the rubble around our lives

the opportunity for new birth.

See us through the birth pangs

that are never terminal

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen

Proper 29 – Year B

Truth telling God,

you sent your son to testify to the truth.

We now have the map to that world.

Continue to show us the way

to the world of truth

where Christ reigns and lives with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God for ever and ever. Amen
